An investigation is under way to find out why a dock worker was seriously injured when he became trapped under a one ton bag of potatoes in the hold of a ship.
It happened at 9am yesterday (June 26) at Sheerness Docks as the ship - the Amer Choapa - was being unloaded.
The 65-year-old man worked for contractors SKS Consultancy Ltd which is based at the docks off Bridge Road.
A SKS spokesman preferred not to comment but a docks spokesman said: "An investigation is under way to find out exactly what happened. The ship had arrived from Cyprus with a load of potatoes from Israel."
The Kent Air Ambulance landed on a nearby jetty and flew the man to King's College Hospital in London where he is being treated for a broken pelvis and a broken leg.
Firefighter Dave Hewitt from Sheppey fire station, said: "He was put in a stretcher and lifted from the hold by a dockside crane to the waiting air ambulance.
The Health and Safety Executive is making enquries into the incident.
