The threat of a thunderstorm didn’t stop hundreds of guests going along to a family fun day in memory of a hero Sheppey soldier.
It was held at the Co-op Sports and Social Club in Sheerness on Saturday in aid of The Dannyboy Trust, which was set up by relatives of Daniel Holkham, the 19-year-old Warden Bay Rifleman who died while on duty in Afghanistan in 2010.
Organisers estimate there were almost 1,000 people there and it has raised around £900 for the trust, which supports Island children.
There were 29 different attractions including a bouncy castle, mini Olympics, pony rides, refreshments, games and stalls.
Inspirations Dance Group did a show, the St John Ambulance Band performed and the Sheppey Sea Cadets were also there.
Sheppey FM provided entertainment and there were other charity stalls including the Royal British Legion.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s Fire Fit test was a big hit – with many people donning a suit and rolling out a hose before carrying out a ‘rescue’.
Heats were held throughout the day and the two fastest were given trophies with the next fastest two presented with medals.
Although the forecasters were wrong for most of the day, it did come to an abrupt end about 4pm after the thunder started and the wind got up.
Trust chairman, Daniel’s dad Rodney, said: “It went really well and we had a good turn-out.
“I’d like to thank everyone who came along and the 24 volunteers who helped – they worked very hard.”
