DIY SOS: The Big Build makes progress on new home for Sheppey family

Progress has been made by the DIY SOS teams in their efforts to build a new family home on Sheppey.

More than 70 tradespeople were at the site in Elmley Road, Brambledown, today working on the house, which has been constructed from scratch for couple Garry and Kyle Ratcliffe and their four adopted children.

Filming got underway at the busy 170 sq ft site on Tuesday and the first four days have been spent constructing the timber frame walls and roof, fixing most of the plumbing and electrics, under-floor heating and windows.

The next five days will see the kitchen and bathroom being fitted, joinery being done and interior painting and decorating being carried out.

The big reveal to the Ratcliffe family will take place next Thursday morning.

Gordon Whistance, part of the design team for DIY SOS, said the build is on schedule, although it has been “very stressful” at times.

He added: “The house is going to look amazing when it’s complete.

“It chokes me to do this job as we work for really loved people all the time.”

When asked if the team was happy with the progress so far, Mr Whistance said: “In short, yes we are delighted.

“But the long answer is that the effort, stress, anxiety and sheer doggedness it take to get to this step is exhausting. But it is a small price to pay for this family of six.

“They are probably exhausted all the time and it’s so great that we will be able to make their lives a little easier for them.”
