More than 1,000 Islanders lined the streets to pay tribute to
Sheppey soldier, 19-year-old Daniel Holkham.

Several high ranking military officers and more than 50 of
Daniel’s fellow rifleman also travelled to attend his funeral,
which took place earlier today (Friday).

Daniel, who was a member of 3rd Battalion the Rifles, died last
month after challenging a suicide bomber who was trying to enter a
bazaar near the town of Sangin in Helmand Province,
Afghanistan.

The funeral cortege left Hogben and Sons funeral directors at
10.30am and made its way through Sheerness, where hundreds of
people lined the route and threw flowers onto the hearse.

It then made its way to the family’s home in St James Close in
Warden, where it picked up Daniel’s parents, Rodney and Tracy,
brothers Matthew and Andrew and his girlfriend Nikki Rudd.

As the hearse made its way into Eastchurch, hundreds of people
assembled as a sign of respect to the fallen hero.

An emotional service then took place in All Saints’ Church,
which more than 300 mourners attended, before Daniel was buried in
the churchyard.

Family and friends headed to Minster Working Men’s Club after
the service.
