A memorial walk and vigil to honour Lee Rigby, the soldier murdered in Woolwich, will be held on Sheppey.

Lee Ewart, of Manor Road, Rushenden, has organised the gathering to pay tribute to 25-year-old drummer Mr Rigby, who was killed by Islamic extremists last month.

It will take place on Sunday at the same time a service is being held in Woolwich.

Those who wish to pay their respects are asked to meet at the sandpit in Beachfields Park, Sheerness, at 3.30pm.

Walkers will then make their way across the park, past Tantra and to the sculpture outside McDonald’s where a two-minute silence will be held at 4.15pm.

Members of Sheppey Event Marshalling Unit will be making sure things run smoothly.

Mr Ewart, 49, said: “I wanted to show that everyone in the country is behind the family of Lee Rigby.

“I think the whole nation has felt it and you can see it at the memorial – the flowers that have been laid in Sheerness.

“This is a peaceful march to show respect for a fallen soldier, and anyone, regardless of politics or religion, is welcome.

“However, I do not want politics or religion to come into it. It’s about showing respect.”
