A drunk thug who groped and punched a woman before threatening to “bash her head in” with a lamp has been jailed.
Michael Lilley, of Sheerness, sexually attacked his victim in a prolonged encounter which left her with injuries all over her body.
At a sentencing hearing, Judge James Taylor KC was told that Lilley had drunk almost an entire litre of vodka before flying into a rage at an address in Sittingbourne.
“She told you that you should leave or she would call the police, but you instead tried to cuddle and kiss her,” said Judge Taylor.
“You then started to grab her around the breast area and when she put her arms out to stop you you grabbed her by the collar.
“You pushed her into a cupboard and she fell and hit her head on the wall.”
The judge then described how Lilley, 33, later got on top of the victim and tried to pull down her trousers.
“You had your arm across her chest to hold her down and that caused her to bite you to try to get you off her,” he added.
The brute also punched the woman to the left temple before ripping a lamp out of the wall and holding it up to hit her.
“You repeatedly told her you were going to bash her f***ing head in and kill her,” said the judge.
But luckily, the victim was able to get away and suffered only minor injuries including scratches and bruises to her legs, arms, eye and breast.
Lilley, of Granville Road, Sheerness, was charged with sexual assault and appeared in Canterbury Crown Court over video link from prison last week wearing a black polo shirt.
Mitigating, defence barrister Sophie Nandy explained that her client had been making progress to improve himself and help fellow inmates.
“Mr Lilley accepts that he is an alcoholic, but he has taken steps and acted proactively towards recovery,” said Ms Nandy.
“You repeatedly told her you were going to bash her f***ing head in and kill her...”
“He is a one-to-one mentor helping other people in prison with addiction.
“He left school at 15 with no qualifications, while in prison he’s got his mathematics qualifications - he’s got the grit and the will to make improvements.
“His history of poor compliance with court orders stands in stark contrast to the progress that he’s made while on remand - it’s almost like the other side of a coin.”
But handing down Lilley’s sentence, Judge Taylor made reference to the thug’s long criminal record, which includes sexual assault, harassment and malicious communication.
“I am impressed by the steps that you’ve taken in prison, you’ve helped others with their addiction,” said the judge.
“And I suspect that the dark side of you only comes out when you’ve had alcohol.
“But you have a history of violent, and frankly, misogynistic behaviour.”
Lilley was jailed for two years and nine months, including three months for breaking a previous suspended sentence.
He will serve half of the sentence in custody and the remainder out on licence.
