An Irish wolfhound called Billy was among the dogs to take part in the Wags and Walkies fundraiser.

In all 66 people plus their animals completed the three-mile sponsored walk which started and finished at Barton’s Point Coastal Park on Sunday.

The route took in Sheerness Canal and the beach front.

K9 Nanny, in Minster, had a stall offering claw trims in return for a donation to the charity. Goodie bags containing treats and pens were also handed out to those who took part.

It was organised by Katie Tyler who works as a community fundraiser for the Wisdom Hospice, which is based in Rochester and serves Medway and Swale.

The 22-year-old, who lives in Oak Lane, Minster, said: “It is the first time we’ve brought it to the Island and it went really well. Of those taking part, 36 signed up on the day.

“It was a bit foggy to start with but then it cleared up. Nobody got lost.

“From the sign ups we’ve raised over £400 so far but there is more sponsorship money to come in over the next week or two so it will be more.

“We’re trying to bring more events over to Swale to raise awareness of the hospice and following the success of this one I think we’ll do it on the Island again.”
