Motorists were this morning (Sunday) being urged by police to make only essential journeys as snow and sleet made the roads trecherous.

A spokesman said there had been several minor incidents on the A249 where vehicles had left the road due to slippery conditions.

She said gritters were due to go out later today and advised people to leave extra time for their journeys.
