Today marks 50 years to the day since England won the World Cup.
One couple’s memories of the day are a bit different, as they almost lost all their wedding guests.
George and June Heath married at 3.30pm on the day of the final and, according to June, 71, they have some hilarious memories.
The flower arranger said: “All of the men were down the road in the rental TV shop watching the game. I said ‘Don’t forget, you’re here for our wedding!’”
Eventually the game ended with commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme’s famous: “They think it’s all over ...” and June said: “When we did win, it caused quite a laugh; and now we’ve got so many fond memories of that day.”
The couple met while working at a department store.
A 17-year-old George kept popping to the toilet as he had to pass by June to get there.
They got engaged a year later and married at the age of 20, with a “rather mad night” following their wedding.
June said: “The guests spent the whole night singing I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles and Land of Hope and Glory.”
The grandparents-of-five moved to Sheppey a decade ago and now live in Bayview.
The wedding had a red, white and blue theme to celebrate the World Cup and the couple enjoyed their 50th anniversary last week with around 180 guests, from as far as Scotland, attending.
Of this summer’s European Championships, June said: “We did really think England could win this year but they made a complete boo-boo of it.”
