Sheppey United captain Billy Bennett has left the club - but they’ve added a new face to the ranks.

While midfielder Bennett has left Holm Park after scoring 40 goals in 119 appearances, The Ites have announced the arrival of Josh Wisson from Ashford United.

“All good things must come to an end,” said Bennett, speaking to the club on Monday.

“Thanks to those who stuck by me throughout all and welcomed both me and my family into your community with open arms. You really are the heartbeat of the club and the support and appreciation has been unbelievable.

“I have nothing but respect for the club and I do hope that our paths cross again one day as it’s a club that will forever have my heart. This was a really tough decision to make but I need to give myself a new challenge."

Joint chairman Matt Smith thanked Bennett for his efforts and said the player had an offer “too good to turn down.”

Mr Smith said: “Whilst we are disappointed Billy is leaving he has done so with the honour we expect from our captains both past and present.

“Good luck Billy and maybe one day our paths will cross again in the fullness of time.”

It’s been a busy time at Sheppey, with plenty of ins and outs since the change of management in the summer.

Wisson is the latest new man at the Isthmian League side.

Former England schoolboys' international Wisson has previously been at Sittingbourne, Herne Bay and most recently Ashford, where he has twice played in play-off finals.

Sheppey beat Lancing 2-1 on Saturday in a comeback win thanks to goals from Warren Mfula and Tom Hanfrey. They head to Hythe Town tomorrow (Tuesday) night.
