Heavyweight boxer Dave Jones has been putting in the miles ahead of his title fight on Saturday night.
Unbeaten Jones (6-0) fights Czech Republic boxer Jiri Svacina for an international challenge in his first eight-round professional contest.
The fight is at Maidstone Leisure Centre as part of the “Mote Park Destruction” bill that features a host of Kent professionals.
Jones, 34, has been going all-out in his preparation under the watchful eye of trainer Ray Askew with sparring across the country.
Jones said: “We have been working on the fitness through my boxing and done a lot of sparring. We’ve been to Doncaster and Rotherham and I feel as fit as anything. I have had some proper hard sparring with fighters who are at a much higher level than who I will be fighting this weekend.”
Svacina has had 31 professional fights, losing his last 12.
“He is someone I should be beating,” said the Queenborough boxer. “This is the first step and if I can win this title, there could be bigger belts to go for, like the Southern Area. Hopefully, we can go further.”
Jones was in Doncaster for sessions with unbeaten prospect David Allen and met former Olympian medallist David Price for some rounds in Rotherham.
Former Commonwealth champion Price is looking to get back to the big time and won his weekend fight against Vaclav Pejsar with a KO victory.
Jones said: “I have certainly been doing the miles but it is great to be testing myself at that level.”
He is on the same bill as Medway’s Grant Dennis, who is also going for an international challenge belt. Other boxers in action include Maidstone’s Chris Matthews, Chatham’s Charlie Shane and Strood’s Louis Greene.
Tickets are still available at £35 or £55 for ringside, which includes table service. Call 07494 704066.
