A darts tournament was staged at the Minster Working Men’s Club over the weekend.

The final pitted Sheerness thrower Ricky O’Brien against Sittingbourne’s Lee Cocks and it was the home player who claimed the victory.

Social distancing was in place at the event, temperatures checked on entry, table service only and masks worn when moving around the venue, but participation was well down on the 67 who had entered. In the end, only 25 took part.

A round-robin whittled those numbers down to 16 for a straight knockout. The quarter-finals saw Mat Edes beat Fred Box 4-2, Cocks defeated Nick Cocks 4-2, O’Brien defeated Danny Faulkner 4-3 while Bob Fuller eased past Steve Howell 4-0.

Lee Cocks was in devastating form in the semis, in a match against Edes where both players consistently scored on plusses, and frustratingly missed a double for a nine-dart finish. He won 5-0. O’Brien beat Fuller 5-3 to take his place in the final. O’Brien stepped up his game in the final to win 6-3.

Organiser Tony Cox said: “Although numbers were down, what was lost in quantity was more than made up for in quality of play.

“We must thank Minster Club, their staff and all the players for enabling this event to go ahead, everybody stuck to the rules and a great day was had by all.” Plans are underway for another tournament next month.
