Sheppey United’s weekend win raised some eyebrows in the Isthmian League but it was no surprise to player-boss Jack Midson.

He’s seen his team gradually improve after a slow start at the new level and on Saturday they claimed a second league win after defeating South East leaders Ramsgate.

A second-half double from recently-signed Rodney Adamon Eruotor put them two goals infront before Ramsgate - who were seven unbeaten at the top of the table prior to the weekend - scored with 13 minutes left. Sheppey held on for a 2-1 win.

“It is not a surprise to us,” said Midson. “We knew that kind of result had been coming, it makes it even more disappointing in the start we had.

“We should have beaten Beckenham and drawn with Sittingbourne and that would have been another four points on the board, but if only football was that easy and you got what you deserved!

“Sometimes you have to make sure you earn your points and we have done that recently. If we apply ourselves properly we are more than capable of winning these games.”

Sheppey claimed a point from unbeaten Whitehawk the week before their trip to Ramsgate and the big challenges keep coming, with a trip to high-flying VCD this Saturday.

Midson, new to management this season, said: “We have had some tests, against Whitehawk we had two players pull out of the warm-up and I had to deal with that while warming up myself.

“In the cup matches we had enforced changes, people going on holiday, it has been a test. I am sure others have this, I guess whoever deals with it the best and has the strength in depth in the squad will be higher up in the league.”

Sheppey announced before the weekend that striker Dean Grant - part of the quadruple-winning squad - was leaving. He played for K Sports in a 4-2 defeat at Rusthall on Sunday.

Midson has been making slight adjustments to what he inherited at the start of the campaign.

He said: “There are some fantastic players who have been in the squad but for whatever reason, they might not cut it or leave for different reasons, it happens to every club and if anything it hasn’t happened as much here as it has at other clubs.

“We have been quite loyal with our squad and we will continue to do that, but where changes have to be made I need to be brave and make those decisions.

“As a manager I have given them loyalty and chances but if they are not doing it, unfortunately as nice as I can be, I have to make those changes to the club.”

Sheppey will have to assess the fitness of defenders Dan Birch and Ashley Sains before the weekend, with both going off with knee injuries on Saturday. Birch got a knock while Sains was a full-blooded challenge.

“It was like two atoms coming together,” said Midson. “Both came off badly, their player worse I think. You want them to tackle but you do pick up injuries. We will assess them but we have good cover in that area.”
