Minster's Ross Wilson won gold for Great Britain at the Cote d’Azur International table tennis event in France.

The Paralympic bronze medallist was competing for the first time since London 2012.

Wilson was competing in the men’s class eight category and it proved to be an event to remember for GB, as fellow competitors Megan Shackleton and Kim Daybell also clinched gold.

Wilson has endured a frustrating two years since winning a bronze medal in the team event in London, having been unable to play due to a shoulder problem.

The 19-year old, who was ranked No.2 in the world before his injury, reached the final with a 3-0 win against the Brazilian Luis Filipe Guarnieri Manara. He then belied his lack of match play to beat the experienced Fabian Rignell of Sweden in three close sets to take the gold.

He said: “The final was a tough match and he is a good player. But I was playing well and when it came to the big points, I was a bit safer and smarter.

“Coming to a tournament and experiencing all the pressure again has been great for me and I can take that with confidence to the next tournament I play.

“It was so frustrating knowing I couldn’t play so I used that frustration to work on other parts of my game – my physical strength and the mental side of things – and that has helped. It’s made me faster on the table and a bit smarter on the close points.”
