Sheerness East finally recorded their first victory of the season in the Vandanel Kent County League Premier Division last Saturday.
At the 14th attempt, after previously having picked up just one point, Dave Down’s side won 2-1 at Lewisham Borough.
The delighted East manager said: “It was a big relief and it’s given everyone at the club a massive lift."
The victory at fifth-placed Lewisham was even more commendable in view of the fact it was bottom-of-the-table East’s first league game since December 6.
After surviving an early Borough barrage, East scored through Craig Holland and Jon Martin, who netted with a header from Matt Longhurst’s cross.
Holland then missed another good chance just before half-time and Down feared it was going to be a case of ‘here we go again’ after Lewisham pulled a goal back straight from the second-half restart – but it didn’t work out that way.
“We battened down the hatches,” Down added. “Apart from keeping them out, we also had a few chances to increase the lead."
