Sheppey United chairman Matthew Smith urges Islanders to get behind his side in big promotion clash

Sheppey United are hoping to be double record breakers for their Easter Monday promotion showdown.

More than 300 fans are expected to turnout for the 3pm clash with Glebe, a record home crowd for the club since it reformed.

Should the attendance figure top 326, it will set a new high for the Kent Invicta League.

The nerves of Sheppey’s notoriously passionate and noisy supporters will be stretched to the limit as Monday’s match will go a long way to deciding their team’s promotion hopes.

Sheppey chairman Matthew Smith said: “Monday’s game is huge for both clubs. The atmosphere is going to be electric as I’m sure Glebe will bring a good number of supporters with them. This is a game any Island football fan will not want to miss.”

Sheppey have enjoyed a remarkable upturn in fortunes since the start of the season.

Under the stewardship of manager Ernie Batten, assistants Geoff Record and Barry Morgan, the club embarked on a 19-match winning run which saw them rocket up the league and reach next month’s Kent Senior Trophy Final.

Their form has led to double the number of fans attending games at their Holm Park base since the start of the season, with Sheppey recording the second-highest Step 6 league crowd in the country four times since December.

Mr Smith said: “Whatever happens from now until May, it’s remarkable what Ernie and the boys have achieved this season.

"They’ve helped return Sheppey to the hearts and minds of Islanders who have responded brilliantly. The coming weeks are going to be tense, but let’s all enjoy the ride.”
