Sheppey United players should need no reminders of the problems teams at the bottom of the Isthmian League can pose.
They narrowly beat second-bottom Corinthian at the weekend, struggling early on before Lekan Majoyegbe scored the only goal of the Isthmian League South East fixture. The Ites head to another struggling side, Faversham Town, this Saturday.
The Lilywhites have made a host of new signings after Simon Austin’s appointment as manager last month including a couple of players who started the season with Sheppey, joining others who had already made the switch across Swale.
“That Corinthian game does my team-talk for me, really,” said player-boss Jack Midson.
“I just need to bring up that game and that first half. If we play like that, against some of the quality that they have got, we will get punished.
“If we apply ourselves properly, with the way we have planned and trained, then we should be fine.”
Players making the move from Sheppey in recent weeks have been Matt Parsons and Helge Orome, joining former Ites including Harrison Carnegie, Connor Wilkins and Malachi Hudson.
“We will concentrate on what we need to do,” Midson added.
“It is important to go to those teams below us and make sure we don’t get beat.
“They might be up for it a bit more than normal, playing against your old club. They need results, they are not in a good place, but we won’t take them for granted.
“We are away from home but we need to take it to them, we can’t sit back and soak up pressure, that is not enough.”
Sheppey have players in their own ranks who have been at Faversham, including new addition Jake Embery, who signed last week. He started out at Herne Bay before a big move to Maidstone and more recently was back at Bay.
Versatile Jamal Ossai has also joined from Ashford United, having enjoyed a successful spell at Hatcham Manor. Both he and Embery were on the bench at Corinthian. Embery replaced Midson in the last minute while Ossai was unused.
Reflecting on that game, Midson said: “They did a job to frustrate us, but we gave the ball away far too much and we put ourselves under pressure.
“The first half was a bit tentative, a bit nervous. I don’t know why.
“Second half we started well straight away. It gave us impetus to push on, but we need to be better than that against the top teams.”
Defenders Dan Birch and Ashley Sains are back in training while Jacob Lambert is easing back in after injury and played last night (Tuesday). Renford Tenyue has a knee injury that could end his season and is due a scan soon to confirm the seriousness of his problem, which is likely to need surgery.
Sheppey named a young team for their Kent Senior Cup game at Margate on Tuesday night and lost 3-0. Midfielders Bailey Catherick, 17, and Coby Judd, 18, were included on the bench after signing first-team forms. Another promoted youngster, Teddy McIntyre, came close to scoring but was denied by the upright from 25 yards.
Margate won the game with an opener before the break from Peter Ojeman and two goals in the second half scored by Ben Greenhalgh.
