Sheppey United defender Jahmal Howlett-Mundle claimed he suffered homophobic abuse during their Kent Senior Trophy win on Sunday.

Howlett-Mundle came out as bisexual in August and that same month said he was the target of abuse. He posted on social media after the win over Hollands & Blair that it happened again.

In his tweet, the central defender wrote: “Opposition player was homophobic towards me today but I’ve got the medal son.”

Responding to one of the replies, he added: “It almost marred what was a great game of football for us but sadly not everybody has the decency to be good human beings.”

Sheppey were a goal down against Hollands & Blair but fought back to win it 2-1 with goals from substitute Michael Hagan and Dean Grant.

“I’m fortunate enough to be part of such an amazing team,” said the defender.

“The abuse is unacceptable but small minded people don’t go far in life.”

The Sheppey player took the decision to reveal to his teammates he was coming out as bisexual at the start of this season.

At the time, he said: “It was the right time to be honest with myself and my loved ones and by being open about my sexuality, maybe it will give others the confidence to follow suit.”
