An 80-year-old whose car overturned on a dual-carriageway yesterday is now in a life-threatening condition in hospital, despite the original belief that her injuries were minor.

Police were called to an overturned silver Citroen C3 on the Sheppey-bound A249 near the petrol station at the top of Detling Hill at 12.13pm on Tuesday, after the vehicle was hit by a lorry.

The HGV, which didn't stop, is believed to have had a white cab and a grey back.

Paramedics took two people to hospital with what were originally believed to be minor injuries.

However, the health of one of the casualties – a woman in her 80s – has deteriorated and her condition is now described as being life-threatening.

A stretch of the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway of the A249 was closed between 2pm and 3pm today as officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out enquiries at the scene.

They are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, has dashcam footage or who saw either vehicle prior to the incident to come forward.
