Motorists travelling between Maidstone, Sittingbourne and Sheppey are to face 20-mile diversions because of roadworks.
National Highways is to close the A249 at Stockbury over two weekends in November to move gas, water and electricity supplies.
It is advance work for building a £92m flyover across the roundabout at junction 5 of the M2.
The first phase will shut the Maidstone-bound carriageway of the A249 from Stockbury to the South Green turn-off on the Detling side of the roundabout from 10pm on Friday, November 5, to 5am on Monday, November 8.
Drivers are being told to use the M2 to the Bluebell Hill interchange near Rochester at junction 3 and join the A229 towards Maidstone and then the M20 to junction 7.
To avoid motorways, they are advised to join the Chatham-bound A2 at Key Street and take the A229 into Maidstone before rejoining the A249.
A second closure is planned from Friday, November 12, to Monday 15 November, 15.
The A249's Maidstone-bound carriageway will be closed from Bobbing roundabout to the north of Stockbury roundabout.
Drivers heading towards Maidstone are advised to us use the old Sheppey Way, Chestnut Street and Maidstone Road before re-joining the A249 at Stockbury.
A National Highways spokesman said: "The first phases of carriageway closures will start soon to allow us to move utility pipes running under the A249. We need to complete this before the main construction starts next year so the bulk of the preparation work underneath the carriageway is finished."
Work has already begun clearing trees and shrubs from around the building site.
A mobile exhibition was at Morrisons supermarket in Sittingbourne yesterday (Thursday) and is at Stockbury Memorial Hall today (Friday) to 4pm. It will be at Farthing Corner services (Moto Medway) on the M2 tomorrow (Saturday) from 11am to 4pm.
Engineers will be on hand to answer questions.
Updates are available by calling 0300 123 5000 or emailing m2j5@highwaysengland.co.uk. A virtual exhibition is on the National Highways website.
Two dedicated slip roads are also being built to make it easier for traffic to join the M2. Maidstone Road to the A249 Stockbury Roundabout will be closed and re-routed to link with Oad Street. The existing junction of Oad Street will be closed and a new link provided.
