A lane of the A249 near Sittingbourne is likely to remain closed until next month after a car was shredded by the central reservation.

Police and medics were called to the Sheppey -bound carriageway, near the Grovehurst roundabout, at about 4.30am on Sunday, September 22, after a black Kia Ceed crashed into the wire barrier .

One man was treated but did not have to be taken to hospital.

Following the crash, the outside lane was closed by Highways England - which maintains that stretch of the road - causing rush-hour delays.

It has now been revealed the lane is likely to be shut until Monday, October 7, while road workers wait for specialist equipment to arrive.

A Highways England spokesman said the closure was for the safety of the workforce: "Restrictions on the A249 at Grovehurst are likely to last until Monday, October 7.

"Contractors are currently working on the central barrier to make it safe which involves taking out the old posts and cementing new ones in ready for the new barrier to be fitted.

"This will take some time.

"Safety is always a priority for Highways England and the road will reopen once contractors are satisfied it is safe to do so and we do thank road users for their patience until the work is complete.

"We only add restrictions to allow contractors to do the work safely."

The driver was arrested and later admitted failing to provide a urine specimen for analysis and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence. He was fined £277 and banned from driving for a year.
