Police seize £16,000 of 'stolen' cigarettes after chase in Sittingbourne

Police have retrieved thousands of pounds worth of stolen cigarettes following a police chase in the town.

Officers recovered £16,000 worth of tobacco in Sittingbourne after witnessing a van driving on the wrong side of the road near the A2.

It happened at around 2.15pm on Thursday, September 9, and patrols in the area requested the vehicle to stop, but it failed to do so.

A short pursuit then took place, before the driver and passenger escaped the vehicle.

The driver of the car was located at Sittingbourne railway station after the incident and was arrested.

Following a search of the van officers recovered around £16,000 of cigarettes which are thought to have been stolen.

The suspect, a Lancashire man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft, failing to stop when directed and theft of motor vehicle.

He has been released pending further inquiries.
