A woman was taken to hospital after her car was involved in a collision with an ambulance.

There were long tailbacks as London Road, Sittingbourne, had to be closed near its junction with Staplehurst Road.

One motorist said she was stuck in traffic for 40 minutes.

School buses also had to be turned around earlier this morning.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance said: "We can confirm that one of our ambulances was involved in a collision with another vehicle in London Road, Sittingbourne, at approximately 7.55am today.

"The ambulance was not responding to a call or transporting a patient.

"Another ambulance attended the scene of the collision.

"A woman from the other vehicle was treated for injuries, not thought to be serious, before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

"The ambulance crew were shaken but uninjured."

He added: "We wish the woman a good recovery."
