An annual run that was to be held for a 10th time has been cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

The Sittingbourne Invicta 10K race was due to happen on Sunday, May 17, starting from Westlands School in Sittingbourne.

The cancellation comes after the Government advised against 'mass gatherings' and said people should keep their distance from one another.

A spokesman for the organiser, the Rotary Club of Sittingbourne Invicta, said: "Following the most recent official government recommendations regarding COVID-19, we regret to inform you that the Sittingbourne Invicta 10K Race has now been cancelled.

"We understand that this decision comes as a disappointment, but ultimately we all want to protect the health and safety of our runners and race stewards, and we believe this is the correct decision to make.

"Refunds will be made to all those already entered.

"We look forward to welcoming you again next year on May, 16, 2021."

Runners come from across the country to compete in the Sittingbourne Invicta race

The first 10k run was held in March 2011 and it has become one of the highlights of the Swale running calendar, with participants coming from across the country.

It includes a shorter run for youngsters and last year's main race attracted almost 300 runners.

Meanwhile, Sittingbourne Invicta has also cancelled its regular weekly meeting and all its events until at least June 30.

A club spokesman added: "If government advice changes we will obviously reconsider our options."
