An 18th century building used by Sports Direct is set to be partially demolished and turned into flats and new retail space.

If approved, the two-storey rear extension of the Grade II building in High Street, Sittingbourne, will be torn down.

The front of the ground floor is currently used by Sports Direct, while a separate retail unit space would be added behind the store.

Additionally, a new two-storey block with eight flats would be erected, if the plans are given the green light.

Proposals sent to Swale council outline plans for six one-bedroom homes and two two-bedroom homes.

A total of eight car parking spaces would also be created, as well as 12 full-time jobs for the retail spaces.

Planning documents outline provision of separate and secure refuse and cycle storage for both residential and commercial uses.

Both refuse areas will be accessible from the south elevation of the property via a walkway.

While the two-tier cycle storage, which can hold up to eight bikes, will be found opposite the building's stairs.

A design statement said the development has taken to "conscientious approach" and would respect the character of the host property and surrounding area.

It added: "It is recognised that the scheme provided within the documents outlines a carefully considered proposal which has been established in collaboration with the Local Planning Authority.

"The proposal seeks to create a high-quality mixed-use development within a sustainable town centre location.

"It is considered that the cumulative effects of the proposal will have significant benefits to the longevity and vitality of the Sittingbourne Conservation Area and the Grade II listed host building."
