A railway line was blocked for around two hours after a car crashed through a level crossing last night, ending up on the train tracks.

Southeastern trains were unable to run between Sittingbourne and Faversham due to the incident involving a blue Toyota at the crossing in Teynham.

Railway response staff were called at around 10.30pm and were on site within half an hour.

The line was cleared just before midnight and trains heading towards London were able to run although staff said they did not know what repairs were needed to reopen it in the other direction.

By 12.30am, repairs to the track were completed and the line at Teynham was reopened allowing a queue of trains from Sittingbourne, back to Sole Street, to the move on.

The line was fully reopened and operating as usual by 1am.

Replacement transport was arranged and customers were able to use bus services between Ebbsfleet, Gravesend and Dartford.

Officers from the British Transport Police were also in attendance and have been asked for further information on the accident.

This is not the first time an incident has happened at the level crossing in Lower Road, Teynham.

In 2017, a DPD van was struck at the Frognal Farm crossing by a high-speed train heading towards London.

The delivery driver, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with head injuries.
