A takeaway scored one of the lowest hygiene ratings possible after inspectors discovered chemicals stored beside food, meat on the floor and flies in the kitchen.

Kwun's Chinese in Sonora Fields, Sittingbourne, was handed a score of one out of five stars after a report was carried out by Swale council.

The inspector revealed the outlet needed major improvement after a visit in August.

However, he has since revisited and found significant improvements have been made.

He wrote: "I noted in your store area that you had inedible, hazardous chemicals stored in among dry food.

"This included two cans of tyre and trim spray, and car oil.

"Open pans of sauces were also seen on the floor under the cooking range, and there were some bowls of cooked chicken, cooked noodles, and beef on the floor under the preparation table.

"It was observed that a member of staff removed some sauce from a pot, which was then heated in the wok and then pushed back under the wok range with their foot.

"With these practices there was a risk of contamination from things falling into the food containers."

The takeaway's poor storage practices were also highlighted.

The report noted food was being kept in a manner that could lead to cross contamination.

Some food was being covered using tea towels, one of which was fraying.

Several containers used to store dry ingredients were also flagged by the inspector.

They said: "The outside of these containers was in a filthy state.

"All articles that come into contact with food are to be effectively cleaned and where necessary disinfected.

"An open container had another container stacked directly on top of the food.

"Any dirt from the base of the container could contaminate the food it is sitting on."

At the time of the inspection, it was also discovered the staff were not wearing suitable protective clothing.

And a tin opener was also reported as being very dirty

Kwun's storage area, racking and preparation table was described as being near a toilet.

The inspector added: "The area was crowded with unused items and items that do not relate to the business, such as medicines, car accessories, bags shoes etc.

"Food premises are to be kept clean and maintained in good repair and condition.

"I noted there were also small flies in the preparation area.

"At the time of my visit both of the rear external doors were open which could potentially allow pests, such as flies, into the food store area and kitchen."

The takeaway was revisited by the inspector on Friday last week, who was happy to see improvements had been made.

The latest report said: "I am really pleased to see the work to clear out the store area has been done along with your food hygiene training.

"You now have a new, safer food business."

The takeaway's food hygiene score is yet to be updated.
