A community seating area in Sittingbourne has been named after life-long resident of Howard Avenue who died in 2006.

The underpass between Staplehurst Road and Howard Avenue is now called Jordan Way in memory of John Jordan whose estate was left in trust to the Sittingbourne Society to benefit residents in Milton Regis.

The area has also been spruced up in memory of Mr Jordan who loved the great outdoors.

Trees have been planted, missing brick paving replaced, graffiti removed, two benches refurbished and an additional two seats are due to be installed in the near future.

Money from the John George Jordan Bequest Fund was also used to install CCTV in the area a year ago in a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area.

The project was funded by ward and county councillors as well as Swale Borough Council and Kent County Council.

To mark the officially naming of the underpass a thanksgiving and tree planting ceremony was led by Father Lorne Denny, from the parish church the Holy Trinity Church, in Milton Regis.

Residents from the surrounding area as well as representatives from Swale Police, the Sittingbourne Society - which looks after the fund, and councillors Elvie Lowe, Adam Tolhurst, Alan Willicombe and Roger Truelove were also in attendance.
