Motorists are being warned about “treacherous” driving conditions after heavy rainfall.

The alert comes as millions of people embark on a Christmas getaway.

Standing water remains on many roads across Kent especially along the A249 at Stockbury near Sittingbourne which links Maidstone to the Isle of Sheppey.

One bystander warned today: "Drivers need to slow down if they want to get home safely for Christmas."

Part of the M20 at Ashford was also closed today because of flooding.

Last night a man was killed along the 'smart' motorway section of the M20 near Leybourne after a crash. The section was closed for more than 15 hours.

An RAC survey indicated that 3.1 million drivers will make a trip by car to spend time with family and friends over the festive break.

Lorry in flood water

This afternoon the Environment Agency issued flood warnings for the River Bourne from Hadlow to East Peckham and the Upper River Medway.

Staff at the Environment Agency have been working to rule since December 12 in a dispute over pay.
