Stunning new pictures have revealed how work is progressing on a £92 million flyover.

Exclusive drone footage and images show the first raft of changes made to the Stockbury roundabout in a bid to solve congestion on one of Kent’s busiest junctions, used by traffic travelling between Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Maidstone.

Since the last pictures were taken three months ago, newly remodelled link roads have opened.

The upgrade to the Stockbury roundabout, which was given the green light in June 2021 and includes a flyover for traffic heading to and from Maidstone and Sittingbourne, promises to cut queues on the congested A249.

Following preparation works, which included diverting underground water pipes, electricity cables and phone lines, the coast-bound slip-roads were shut for several months.

The closure of Sittingbourne’s Junction 5 coast-bound entry and exit slips began last September and weather issues meant its reopening was delayed by two weeks.

The latest work Highways England announced will see Chestnut Street and Maidstone Road closed for the next two months.

A spokesman said: “This closure is to allow work on the new link to Oad Street and means there will be no access to the roundabout from Maidstone Road.”

The road is scheduled to be closed from today (Monday) until Monday, June 19.

This week there will also be further closures along the A249, from 9pm today (Monday), until 5am on Tuesday.

The A249 Maidstone-bound between the Stockbury roundabout and Church Hill will be shut overnight while National Highways works on the Oad Street link, which is currently being used by traffic travelling to Maidstone on the A249 from Stockbury.

Oad Street will also be fully closed between Pett Lane and the A249 and the London-bound exit on the M2 at Junction 5 will also be closed from 8pm today until 5am tomorrow (Tuesday).
