A scheme to close a Kent high street for a market have reportedly been put on hold.

Travel companies Arriva and Chalkwell had been putting the finishing touches on plans to relocate their bus stops to accommodate the new traffic regulations in Sittingbourne.

But the firms say they have since been told by Kent County Council that the changes have been postponed.

The plans were due to come into effect later this month, when the market was due to move from its current spot in The Forum car park.

It would have meant buses changing their routes, and being unable to pick up and drop off passengers in East Street, instead stopping at the rear of The Forum or outside the station.

Arriva, who have already issued an alternative timetable, are now considering what to do.

A spokesman for Chalkwell said: "For us it means we have to have a redesign, and again communicate that to the travelling public.

"I'm not adverse to having all the buses stopping in one place but if you're going to do that you need to have the infrastructure in place."

Kent County Council has been approached for comment.
