Drivers reported “horrendous” delays on one of the county’s busiest routes this evening.

Traffic queued for hours on the A249 in both directions in Kemsley, around Swale Way – thought to be due to roadworks in the area.

There was also a reported crash on the A249 north-bound at Junction 5 of the M2, at the Stockbury roundabout, which has since been cleared.

Delays have been reported in the Sittingbourne area, with one driver claiming it took him more than an hour to get from St Michaels Road to the Esso garage – a journey which would usually take four minutes.

One mum said: “It’s an absolute nightmare. My child has been sat on the bus since 4.30pm trying to get home from Sittingbourne.

“Hasn’t even made it halfway up the A2 London Road yet.”

Another driver said: “It's horrendous on the London Road going in and out of Sittingbourne.”

The closure of Chestnut Street on the A2 Key Street in Bobbing in both directions of the A249 is also thought to be contributing to the traffic problems in the area.

Police have been contacted for more information.
