Keen runner Jen Coleman got more than just a medal when she crossed the finish line after completing a half-marathon at Disneyland Paris.

Her boyfriend of two years, Lee Simpson, got down on one knee and proposed.

The couple met at Sittingbourne Striders running club when Jen, 26, joined three years ago.

Lee, 23, was already at the club when she started, having joined at the age of 17 when he first got into running.

Jen, who lives with her fiancée in the town’s Archers Park, said: “We were planning to run together, but he’s faster so left to run ahead of me about three miles from the finish.

“As I got to the end and crossed the line, he got down on one knee.”

According to Jen, Lee had some velcro sewn into a special pocket in his running shorts by his mum so he wouldn’t lose the ring during the race.

Jen, who teaches at Queenborough School and Nursery, said: “It was a complete surprise – I didn’t expect a thing.

“We both ran the whole thing with the mouse ears on, too, and he proposed in them!”

Lee, who works in the plumbing sector, said: “It couldn’t gone more smoothly – I’ve been planning it since the beginning of the year when we saw the race for the first time.

“It’s Jen who likes Disney more than me.”

He added: “It was love at first sight, really. We’d spoken a bit at the club before but met each other out one day and really got talking then and things just went from there.”

The half-marathon was the first one to be held at the resort and runners completed the 13.1- mile course through Disneyland accompanied by characters, with entertainment along the way.

Events were also held on the day, including a 5km run and shorter kids’ races from 100m up to 2km.

The couple are planning to tie the knot in 2018 and Jen doesn’t think they’ll take part in the race next time round as they’ll be saving for the big day.
