He might be just six years old but Jayden-Tyler Beckwith has already proved to be a force when it comes to fundraising.

The Hartlip youngster has raised more than £800 for Diabetes UK after his little sister, Ava-June, three, was diagnosed with type one diabetes in May.

Mum Adele, of Matts Hill Lane, said: “It was a bit out of the blue. Ava had not shown any of the signs or symptoms.

“It was Jayden’s birthday and we were walking to school to pick him up and she collapsed.”

She was rushed to Medway Maritime Hospital but tests came back all clear, apart from a high blood glucose level.

More detailed monitoring revealed Ava had type one diabetes, although she had not shown any of the usual symptoms, such as excessive thirst, extreme fatigue, weight loss and frequently needing the toilet.

She now has to have four insulin injections and six blood tests with a finger pricker every day, to test and record her blood glucose.

“Jayden has been very worried about his sister, asking lots of questions,” said Adele, 28.

“When we’re doing her injections, he’s there holding her hand.

“He wanted to do more to help Ava but there’s only so much he can do himself, so I said ‘Why not do something for charity and how about a run?’

“He’s the best brother she could have.”

On July 25, Jayden did a one-mile fun run, accompanied by family friend Liam Morris, and a charity day at his school, Deanwood Primary in Rainham, is a possibility.

Adele added: “The target started at £100. We didn’t expect he would make as much as he has.”
