A crash involving two vans led to one lane of a busy road being closed this morning.

The accident, between a silver Ford Transit and a white van pulling a trailer, happened on the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway of the A249 just before the Stockbury roundabout at around 8am.

Steve Hunt and colleague Lewis Ilsley, who were travelling in the opposite direction on their way to work in Maidstone, acted quickly when they drove past soon after it happened.

They turned around, doubled back and stopped in front of the scene of the collision, using the orange flashing lights on the top of their vehicle to alert oncoming traffic until the emergency services arrived.

Mr Hunt, from Sittingbourne, said: "The driver of the silver transit didn't seem hurt but he seemed like he was in shock.

"Looking at it I don't know how anyone wasn't hurt. If there was anyone in the passenger side of the silver one, they probably would have died."

The 32-year-old, who works as a tyre fitter added: "That road is quite fast."
