A gym in Sittingbourne has been closed this afternoon after a man collapsed and died.

The Swallows leisure centre put the closure in place and medics were called at about 1.45pm.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a male in his 60s who had collapsed.

"We sent an ambulance and a critical care paramedic. The crew provided a whole range of treatment but unfortunately the patient was pronounced deceased at the scene."

A police spokesman said officers were called to help medics at 2.40pm, adding: "There are no suspicious circumstances and no suggestion of any criminal offences."

A notice on The Swallows' website said: "Due to an incident in the gym, we have had to close till further notice."

The rest of the centre, which is managed by Swale Community Leisure Ltd, remained open as usual.

Dave Harcourt, Swale Community Leisure's executive officer, said: "Our team at Swallows leisure centre is shocked and saddened by the death of one of our customers.

"Gym staff did everything they could to revive him before paramedics promptly arrived at the scene. Our thoughts and condolences are with this man's family and friends."
