A popular town attraction needs your help to raise £75,000.

The Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway (SKLR) will spend the money building a ticket office at the viaduct station, which was burnt down in June, leaving just a platform shelter at the site.

It will also pay for fencing and CCTV coverage, the replacement of the existing platform and the creation of a second one, a new waiting room and toilets.

In addition, work will be carried out at Milton Regis Halt, where the platform was destroyed by fire in 2012 and then in 2013 by people using crowbars.

Other needs are security fencing and CCTV as well as an access ramp costing £20,000.

An upgrade or replacement of the toilet block at Kemsley Downs is proposed, so it can be accessed by disabled visitors, along with baby changing facilities and a walkway between the platform and the Footplate Cafe.

SKLR relies upon ticket revenue, the railway shop, and the cafe to provide enough cash to keep operational.

To raise funds for the appeal, entitled Sort Out Sittingbourne (SOS), Screen @ The Avenue in the town’s Central Avenue, will show the movie The Titfield Thunderbolt, which is based on the early days of railway preservation, at 6.30pm for a 7pm start on Saturday, November 8.

Profits will be split between SKLR and the cinema.

Paul Best, a trustee at the railway, said: “It’s really hard work. We have built up this railway for the last 45 years and it’s a real struggle at the best of times.

“We could really do without losing things to fire.”

Companies are being urged to provide sponsorship or donate items such as a shipping container, solar/wind powered CCTV cameras or vandal proof equipment.

SKLR is also keen to hear from any firms that can carry out core samples to determine what the embankments are made of.
