The driver of a lorry which overturned on an M2 slip road had been driving for 11 hours, police have revealed.

Officers were called to the London-bound Junction 5 exit for the Stockbury roundabout at 5.46am and were joined by paramedics and firefighters.

A tweet from the Road Policing Unit said the driver had been on duty for 26 hours and 28 minutes and had been driving for 11 hours and 27 minutes.

The load was also said to have been "completely insecure", the tyres were in a poor condition and some trailer brakes were not connected.

Firefighters used heavy rescue equipment to free the driver who was trapped by their injuries.

The driver was taken to King's College Hospital, London, by road with head and arm injuries.

The lorry was carrying cans of alcohol, including Special Brew, which were left strewn over the road.

The road reopened at about 12.45pm.
