Crews spent more than four hours tackling a straw fire in a field after the blaze caused problems for motorists travelling along the M2 last night.

The fire broke out in a field in Wrens Road, Bregar, Sittingbourne shortly before 8pm and a warning was issued to motorists to take extra care because smoke was billowing across the motorway.

People were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke which was clearly visible across the carriageway between Junctions 5 and 6.

A crew were dispatched to extinguish the blaze at 7.43pm and firefighters remained at the site until 11.15pm when the warning was lifted.
