A man had to be airlifted to hospital with stab wounds after being attacked in Sittingbourne.

He was one of three who were injured in the assault in West Street near the Aida Kebab House just after 9pm on bank holiday Monday.

Another man and a woman also suffered injuries.

The woman was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by road ambulance. The more seriously injured man was taken by road to Rochester airport and then flown to King's College Hospital in London by the Kent Air Ambulance.

Police, some believed to be armed, rushed to the scene of the attack in a fleet of patrol cars and arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of assault.

The man from Sittingbourne remained in custody yesterday (Tuesday) as police made further inquiries.

A police spokesman said: "We are investigating a report that two men and a woman were assaulted at a private address in Sittingbourne.

"The incident took place in West Street at around 9.10pm on Monday. One of the men and the woman sustained injuries that are consistent with knife wounds. Both are expected to make a full recovery."

The individuals involved are all believed to be known to each other.

The attack followed another stabbing 13 days earlier when a man in his 20s was stabbed in a car near the Jenny Wren restaurant in Quartz Way in the Sonora Fields area of Sittingbourne. Shane Andrews, 22, of Ledger Close, Sittingbourne, was later arrested on suspicion of assault.

Student Andre Bent, 21, was stabbed to death during a brawl in Maidstone town centre in the early hours of Sunday. Four men from London have been charged with violent disorder.

The spokesman said the latest attack was not linked to the other two "in any way."
