A man has suffered burns to his hand and face after a chip pan caught alight.

The fire happened in the early hours of this morning in Monarch Drive, Kemsley.

The young man had just got in from work around 3.30am when he decided to cook some food, and momentarily left the room.

He returned to discover the fire, and attempted to carry the pan of hot oil outside the property, suffering burns in the process.

Firefighters helped the man before paramedics arrived.

He was then taken to hospital by ambulance.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service has offered advice following the incident, telling people to remain next to their oven rather than leaving cooking unattended, even if the phone or doorbell rings, and turn the heat off if they leave the room.

If cooking does catch fire, put a lid over the pan and turn off the heat, then leave your home, closing the internal doors on the way to prevent fire from spreading.
