The boss of a cinema company that's opening a branch in Sittingbourne as part of the town's multi-million pound regneration has welcomed the start of the next phase of work.

Keith Pullinger, chief executive officer of Light Cinema, says the eight-screen multiplex will be a "state-of-the-art venue in the heart of a new leisure quarter" – and it will open in 2020.

Earlier this month, Spirit of Sittingbourne, the consortium behind the £59 million revamp, finished a new road layout outside Sittingbourne Railway Station.

Mr Pullinger said: “We’re delighted to see the works in Sittingbourne town centre moving forward, with the works on constructing the leisure building, which will contain the new Light cinema now beginning.

“The state-of-the-art Light Cinema will provide a modern and comfortable venue with a wide range of films and other events on offer.

"We are looking to create a cinema with great social space with appeal to all sectors of the community.

“Opening in 2020, we look forward to welcoming the people of Sittingbourne to our new cinema.”

Big-name restaurants including Nando's, Wildwood and Pizza Express will occupy the same building, with another due to go underneath a Travelodge hotel.
