A major route will be closed this weekend for drainage work as part of a £92 million junction upgrade.

The A249 Maidstone-bound, between Bobbing and Stockbury roundabout, will be shut from 8pm on Friday night.

It is the second closure to take place this month, with parts of the A249 scheduled to be shut for 10 weekends as part of a multi-million pound project.

For drivers heading towards Maidstone from the Bobbing roundabout, there will be a diversion in place via Sheppey Way, Chestnut Street and Maidstone Road.

This will bring motorists to the Stockbury roundabout, where they can continue Maidstone-bound, or join the London-bound M2.

The coast-bound entry and exit slip roads will remain shut and are not expected to reopen until Friday, January 13.

A National Highways spokesman previously said: "We need to carry out a series of weekend closures to continue our drainage works on the A249 from Friday, October 7, to Monday, December 19.

"We know that having additional closures while the slip roads are shut is not ideal, but we need to do this work to move onto the next phase of construction and keep our project on track.

"We’ll be working 24 hours a day to allow us to carry out as much work as possible during the closures."

The road will reopen on Monday at 5am.
