Man taken to hospital after being hit by a Royal Mail van in Central Avenue, Sittingbourne

An 87-year-old pedestrian was taken to hospital after being hit by a Royal Mail van.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the incident happened in Central Avenue, Sittingbourne, near the Post Office at around midday yesterday (Friday).

The road was cordoned off for forensics to investigate

Around a dozen police officers were at the scene along with ambulance crews.

The pedestrian was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital and the road was cordoned off.

A South East Coast Ambulance spokesman confirmed the man suffered bleeding to his head, nose and hand. Kent Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police could be seen examining the tyres of a Royal Mail van at the scene.

Inspector Martin Stevens from the roads policing unit, said: "It [the collision] involved a pedestrian and a red van, which was signpainted with 'Royal Mail' on the side. The driver of the van has been spoken to but no arrests have been made.

"We are reviewing CCTV in the area but would also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision."

Police have confirmed the driver was not a Royal Mail employee and that the vehicle had not been stolen.
