Legal action has been taken to remove a group of travellers who set up an unauthorised camp at a Sittingbourne housing estate.

Swale council is working with police to move the caravans, which have been parked up on land running off Argent Way at Sonora Fields.

They started arriving yesterday afternoon and witnesses reported seeing up to seven police cars at the site soon after.

Today, the council confirmed the travellers had been given an eviction notice ordering the group to move by the end of this week.

A council spokesman said: “The police have issued the relevant legal notice that requests they move on by 9am on Friday.

“We’ve visited the site and are putting measures in place to try to help keep the site clean and tidy until they leave.”

He added: “If anyone has any concerns they can report them to us on 01795 417 850 or the police on 101.”
