A book of condolence has been opened at Borden Grammar School following the death of former head teacher Harold Vafeas.

The much-loved member of staff, who retired in July last year, died on Saturday. He was 58.

Mr Vafeas was at the helm of the school for nine years before he chose to take early retirement due to ill health.

The dad-of-three, who lived in Margate with his wife Maggie, was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2012.

Shortly afterwards he began a sixth-month course of chemotherapy, returning to school as and when he was well enough.

It was hoped he would resume the role full-time last September, but he decided to leave so he could focus on his health.

Anyone who wishes to add a message to the book can visit the school between 9am and 3pm.
