School children in Sittingbourne have performed well in their GCSE exams.

Hundreds of teenagers found out their results as they opened their brown envelopes this morning.

We round-up how each of the town's five secondary schools performed.

Highsted Grammar School students celebrate their GCSE results

At Borden Grammar School, almost half of all grades awarded to the 118 exam takers (45%) were A*s or As.

Typically, pupils take 10 GCSEs at Borden and 29 youngsters achieved eight or more straight As or A*s, while 10 of them secured a full set of 10 As and A*s.

Results were up compared to last year, with 97% of those who sat exams gaining at least five A* to Cs, including English and maths, an increase of 5% over the past three years.

Head teacher Jonathan Hopkins described the pupils’ performance as excellent.

“Borden has achieved its best results for many years and I am delighted for students, parents and staff alike,” he added.

“These results were particularly pleasing as they came at a time of increased rigour in national assessments but show what can be achieved due to the hard work of students, the support of parents and the professionalism of staff.”

Mr Hopkins said he was particularly pleased with improvements in English literature and English language.

The overwhelming majority of boys will be remaining at the school to study A-levels.

Pupils and staff at Fulston Manor School were celebrating another good set of results.

Out of 173 exam takers, 160 gained an A* to C grade, with 111 of them achieving at least five of the top marks.

There were 85 pupils who received at least five A* to Cs, including the core subjects of English and maths.

Head teacher Alan Brookes was satisfied with the results.

“Although slightly down on last year, these results are pleasing when taking into consideration the particular cohort of students and represent the culmination of five years of extremely hard work from all those involved in the process,” he said.

“Many students have done exceptionally well and there were a large number of high achievers from the year.”

Singled out for praise were Benedict Croft, Soraya Holland, Farhan Ahmad, Rhiannon England, Joshua Eldrett, Dominique Akapo, Jack Andrews, Katie Apps, Jordan Byrne and Summer Carty.

Out of 281 pupils who sat exams at Westlands School 100% achieved at least five A* to G grades, with 189 pupils (67%) getting a minimum of five A* to C grades.

Staff said it was pleasing to see an increase in the number of teenagers reaching the A* grade - almost triple the previous year’s figure with 36 A*s awarded.

There was also a 4% increase on the number of students leaving with five or more A* to C grades.

The school said there had been “impressive improvements” in the amount of progress made in English and Mathematics with 82% of pupils making or exceeding expected levels of progress from KS2-KS4 in English, and 77% in maths - both figures are expected to be well above the national average.

Head teacher Simon Cox said: "What a fantastic year group, the best we have ever had in terms of their commitment and attitude.

“I am most pleased that our highest performing subjects are English, maths and science.

“Pupils have made outstanding progress and the new Progress 8 figure, which will be published in the performance tables, will be positive, much higher than virtually all similar schools.”
