Students passed a challenging new exam with flying colours.

Five Year 11 youngsters from Sittingbourne Community College scooped A grades in the school’s “pioneering” introduction of the IGCSE English Language qualification.

Designed as a more rigorous assessment, the examination is meant to be more of a test for the brightest pupils.

It was introduced to Key Stage 4 classes this year and the successful candidates were: Frankie Brown, Jacqueline Greenaway, Dylan Marsh, Zoe Page and Rachael Woolnough.

In addition Year 10 student Charlie Ward, pictured in the middle of the back row, achieved an A* in the maths qualification.

Deputy head teacher and subject leader for English, Matt Lewis, said: “Our recent “Good” Ofsted judgement picked up on the consistency and quality of learning for all students in all their lessons.”

Student Zoe said she and her fellow candidates endured a nervous few days in the run-up to hear the outcome of all their hard work.

She said: “I’m absolutely thrilled with my grade. Next year I want to move to a grammar school, so an A grade is really important to me.”
