Viewers of the TV show Bargain Hunt will be going back in time, thanks to volunteers who work in a 1940s house.

A film crew from the BBC daytime programme visited the The Old Forge wartime house in East Street, Sittingbourne, for an episode which will be shown on Friday, February 17.

Presenter Caroline Hawley met Louise Leppenwell who helped convert her great, great grandparents' former home into one of the town's quirkier tourist attractions.

The house features re-enactors in costume who describe what life was like living during the Second World War, which raged from 1939 to 1945.

It is packed with artefacts like old radios, tea pots, net curtains and memorabilia which were popular at the time.

Louise tells Caroline in the show: "We wanted to keep the memories of how it was, alive.

"Life was difficult for everybody in those days.They lived through horrendous times.

"We don't want to glorify what they lived through but we feel it is important that the memory is kept alive and hopefully will shape our future."

The Old Forge was opened in January 2014 as a living history experience. It was originally a blacksmith's forge but was converted into a watchmaker's and jewellery shop by Louise's great, great grandfather Sidney Brett. It is still owned by the family

Louise's sister Debbie White ran a fancy dress shop called Character Costumes in the building before it closed and became a tea room. The rest of the premises have been converted into a replica 1940s house with a period living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom filled with original furniture and artefacts from 70 years ago.

Caroline, who joined the TV programme in 2013, said: "I love meeting people who have a passion for what they do and love visiting often undiscovered places and unexpected collections. It is a real pleasure to share these hidden gems with viewers."

The series, which pits two couples against each other to snap up bargains at boot fairs and sell at a profit at auction, will be returning to visit the Detling Antiques Vintage and Collectors Fair at the County Showground.

The Old Forge, which dates back to 1700s, will be featured on Friday, February 17 at 12.25pm on BBC One.

It is open every Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
