A takeaway pizza chain has been shut down by health inspectors after a rat infestation was discovered during a routine visit.

Inspectors took the decision to close Papa John's in West Street in Sittingbourne yesterday.

A Swale council spokesman said: "Following an inspection of the premises on Thursday by the Environmental Health team, there was evidence of rat activity and poor structural repair which posed a risk to public health.

"The decision was made to serve a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice which closed the business with immediate effect.

"This will be confirmed at the magistrates court."

It is not yet known how long the takeaway will be closed for. It will depend on the issues identified to the business owner being resolved.

An emergency prohibition notice taped to the window of the takeaway reads: "There is an active live rat infestation and poor structural repair resulting in a significant risk of contamination of food."

The takeaway sells a range of fast food and soft drinks.

Customers are able to visit the premises themselves or place orders through delivery website Just Eat.

The franchise and Papa John's head office have been contacted for comment.
